The musical talent of the NJIT community will be in the spotlight when the string and wind ensembles recently formed by students, faculty and staff give their debut performances on November 14.
In response to the enthusiasm expressed by hundreds of NJIT community members surveyed, the string and wind ensembles were formed as part of the Music at NJIT program launched with the help of a grant from the Bergen Foundation. The string ensemble is conducted by Karen Pinoci and the wind ensemble by Nicholas Santoro. Pinoci and Santoro both have extensive conducting experience in addition to a professional background in music education.
A jazz group has also been formed under the direction of David Rimelis, who performed on campus in October 2013. He has returned to help cultivate the talent at NJIT. A master of several stringed instruments, he plays frequently in area jazz clubs. Rimelis is also a composer, and his work has been performed by leading orchestras, including the New Jersey Symphony.
Music at NJIT invites all those interested in sharing their musical abilities to join the wind and string ensembles, and the jazz group. Jazz enthusiasts can contact Eric Holzer (ech4@njit.edu) or Matthew Lavine (msl23@njit.edu), student leaders of the group. Questions about the NJIT music program, including participation in the wind and string ensembles, can be sent to music@njit.edu.
