Coastal Flooding Solutions:
Resiliency Versus Sustainability

While major coastal storms such as Hurricane Sandy have encouraged thinking about resilience and adaptation to climate change, equally critical social and economic concerns have barely been addressed. However, as Robin Murray and Douglas Gaffney will explain in their Technology and Society Forum presentation, a project in New Jersey’s Delaware Bay has evolved to encompass a solution much broader than the conventional remedial strategy of beach replenishment.

In addition to contending with erosion, storm damage and habitat loss, the Delaware project that Murray and Gaffney will highlight has become an example of a balanced solution that collaboratively addresses key social, economic and environmental issues relevant to storm impacts in urban and suburban communities as well as rural areas.

Murray is an architect and licensed planner with nationally recognized expertise in sustainability and regenerative practice. A Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, she is one of only 420 women among some 4,000 Fellows in the Institute’s total global membership of 88,000. Gaffney is Mott MacDonald’s deputy practice leader for coastal engineering services in the Northeast U.S., focusing on coastal protection, restoration and resilience. He experience includes the design of riverine, coastal, and waterfront structures as well as marine construction. He has worked for the U.S.Army Corps of Engineers as a coastal planner, and as an engineer in the private sector for manufacturers of products used in water resource projects. He is also a Diplomate of Coastal Engineering and a licensed Professional Engineer.
